Dichroic Glass is a type of glass that contains ultra-thin layers of metal, creating colors which are almost holographic. The glass is spray coated with the metal layer in a vacuum. The process was created by N.A.S.A for filtering spacecraft windows. Dichroic is one of the most expensive glass types ever made, averaging around $900m/sq.
Dichroic means "two colors". The unique coating allows the glass to transmit one colour while reflecting another. The glass appears to be different colors when viewed at different angles.
To make these remarkable pieces of jewellery the Dichroic glass is fused with compatible coloured glass to create a design. Pieces are fused and then shaped and refused. Some pieces may have as many as three or four firings before the desired effect is achieved. Because the firing process is unpredictable no two pieces are ever alike so you can be guaranteed of taking away a one of a kind piece of jewellery.
Below is a small sample of the hundreds of Dichroic Glass pendants and earrings that we have in stock at our Subiaco store.
